From Strunk and White's The Elements of Style:
In a series of three or more terms with a single conjunction, use a comma after each term except the last. From Words into Type:
Thus, write,This comma is often referred to as the "serial" comma.
- red, white, and blue
- gold, silver, or copper
- He opened the letter, read it, and made a note of its contents.
In a series of the form a, b, and c or red, white, and blue most publishers prefer a comma (sometimes called the serial comma) before the conjunction, whether the items of the series are words, phrases, or clauses. The consistent use of this comma is recommended, for in many sentences it is essential for clarity. [...]Now go forth and punctuate correctly.
In the examples to follow, the use of the serial comma is necessary to prevent misreading. A series of personal names should have the comma before the conjunction to prevent the first name of the series being construed as a noun in direct address.
- "Anna, May and Walter are here." [Might be read as telling Anna that May and Walter are here.]
- "Anna, May, and Walter are here." [Can mean only that three persons are here.]

Remember when Taylor and I would write you notes with really messed up punctuation? Sometimes I thought you would burst a blood vessel, scream loudly, or storm off in stunned silence. I worked in the lesson, aren't ya proud?
thank you! i am forever adding in the comma before the "and" around here.
I agree! Viva la serial comma!
I'm sad that I missed National Punctuation Day yesterday. Wait; let me rephrase that: "Sigh," I said. "I think--no, I know--that National Punctuation Day is my new favorite holiday! Or is it? Hmmm...."
An A+ to Julie for her excellent punctuation.
I just bought my kids the kiddie version of Eats, Shoots & Leaves (which is, eh-hem, correct without the serial comma of course, as the serial comma is never used before an ampersand). But who cares, right? Here at C&B, we don't follow the rules--we just do whatever "feels" right.
My kids love the book--they think it's HI-larious.
Having all my writing without verbs, using only abbeviations, and very discriptive words only another nurse would understand, I will try harder.
That last post was me.

I just bought the Fourth Edition of Strunk & White's Elements of Style and began taking a writing course. Wish me luck, for writing and punctuating, please.
