I'm fascinated by the Race because it showcases the world and because it brings home the fact that so many of my countrymen and -women fall into the Ugly American stereotype. Few are the contestants who really seem to appreciate the sights they're seeing and the cultures they get to experience. Too many are those who seem to view the world with a sense of superiority and condescension.
That, however, is not the aspect of the Race we'll be discussing today. Rather, our topic of conversation is this: Why is it that at least one team on every season is a couple who's using the Race to try to work out whether they really belong together? This season, it's Rob and Kimberly. Here's what the official Amazing Race site has to say about them:
"Rob & Kimberly met while bartending in Los Angeles, California. The young couple has been dating for two years and recently moved in together. Their primary reason for running the Race is to see if their relationship can withstand the intensity and pressure of traveling around the world at such a frantic pace."The show is constantly showing clips of Rob and Kimberly saying things like, "We're at that point in our relationship when we need to decide whether to get married or go our separate ways."
What?? I'm sorry, but I don't think any healthy relationship ever reaches that point. You're happy together, or you're not. If you both want to get married, great! If not, that's okay too. If one does and the other doesn't, well, you have some issues to work out. But don't just say to yourselves that you've been together for X years, and that's the time when you're supposed to get married, so you'd better fish or cut bait.
These couples are letting society's expectations (or, rather, their perceptions of society's expectations) dictate for them the path of their relationship. It's not about whether they're happy with each other and their relationship -- it's about whether they're supposed to be happy. And whether they're supposed to be happier if they get married.
What an incredibly bad reason to get married.
Now, I don't pretend to be a relationship expert. (Well, sometimes I do.) I do have a marriage that I think everyone should envy, but every relationship is different and needs to be dealt with on its own terms. Perhaps it's conceivable that there are couples out there for whom this kind of thinking works -- maybe it really does make them happy to do what they think society wants them to do. (It's also possible, just maybe, that we don't see the whole story with these couples, but rather just the snippets of interviews CBS thinks will make for good TV. So it isn't really fair to judge them, is it? But I do anyway.)
Get married if you want to. Don't if you don't want to. If you're not sure, work it out. Talk about it. But don't take your relationship on national television and air your differences and fears and grievances there. If you feel like your relationship needs to pass some sort of test to prove it works, maybe you've already failed the test.

I love that show. I'm 2 weeks behind now though :(.
Well said.
Anyone else think they should have a 'best of' race. All of the audiences' favorites back. I would love to see Charla and Myrna back again, they were fun to watch.
Nanette, I love the idea of a "Best Of" Amazing Race! Especially with Charla and Myrna. They'd have to bring BJ & Tyler back -- the hippies are my all-time favorite team.
Uhhh. Excuse me? Kevin and Drew? That little taste of Kevin and Drew from the horrible family season just wasn't enough for this fan.
I can't believe BJ and Tyler are your favorite team, Kel. Kevin and Drew or Chip and Kim all the way. You just liked the hippies and their life-affirming, have-fun ways. Blah-blah-blah. (OK, they'd probably fall fourth or so on my list.)
Nanette, would you put Charla and Myrna number 1 on your list? (I did like them a lot, so I wouldn't complain about seeing them again.)
Rob and Kimberly could have been gone three episodes ago, and I'd be a happy viewer. I'm so done with those character types, too. I wonder if those are then the couples who end up on Dr. Phil, and you're like, "How the hell did those two people ever decide that they should marry?" (Errrr ... not that I ever watch Dr. Phil, of course. I've just heard rumors. Oh, please, people, I'm almost 9.5 months pregnant! Cut me some TV-viewing slack!)
OK -- and because I haven't taken up enough space: How about the teams you most loved to hate? The Guidos from Season 1 were great for that. Amber and Rob (I'm surprised to say because I dreaded having them on) fell into this category, too. Jonathon and Victoria, though? Nah -- I just hate-hated them.
OK, this is my favorite show, but I'm a little worried about how much I remember of it. Is some sort of intervention necessary?
I just hate-hated Amber and Rob. They were awful! He was such a sleazy, smarmy jerk! And they didn't need the money!
I'm so sad that Reichen and Chip aren't married anymore. They seemed like such a good couple. Maybe the money tore them apart. (Not sure whether I'm serious about that or not.)
Do you remember Teri and Ian, the older couple from season three? They were so awful! The way they constantly sniped at each other!
Jonathan and Victoria--don't get me started. I was so happy when they got kicked off. They were just plain hard to watch. You know a reunion race would have them on it. I'm not sure I'd be able to watch.
I like Amazing Race. I just never seem to watch it anymore. I really need DVR. It seems that homework, baths, bedtime stories all fall at the same time as my TV shows. If it isn't on DVD, I probably haven't seen it.
I didn't watch the last season of Amazing Race or this season.
I wonder about couples who subject their lives to TV. Dr.Phil? I'd never take my problems on his show. And the people who barely get along in real life that think being on a reality show is going to make them stronger? Idiots.
So, Kelly..... could I get some advice on how to get my hubby to make dinner once in awhile? :)
I didn't get into the family edition--I thought it was kind of boring.
Kerri-Yeah, I think I liked Charla and Myrna the most...there was a gay couple early on that I really liked also--I just can't remember names. Kelly- I did love the hippies also!
And I really would like to have some of the couples that are fun to hate--Jonathan and Victoria, Rob and Amber...(they make it like a train wreck, kwim?)
Kelly-I totally remember Teri and Ian...in particular a scene where she fell off of her bicycle and he was ripping into her (am I naughty for rewinding and watching just to get a laugh?)
What about that couple from last season...the dentist and wife..can't remember names. I always thought he looked like he could be Phil's evil twin. They were nasty to each other.
I, too, didn't get into the family season -- it just wasn't as much fun.
Yes, the dentist and his little wife! Lake? Was that his name! Ooo, they were awful.
RB, when I figure that out, I'll let you know.
Noooo! Sonya, say it isn't so! Rob was so underhanded! He infuriated me!
Me, I watch Amazing Race because Phil is dreamy.
OOOoooh. I have a mad crush on Phil. It's his damn aloofness and yet caring. And that one cocked eyebrow. Purrrrr.
How could I forget Teri and Ian? They were the original annoying hetero couple. God, they were awful. I remember the opening credits had them turning their heads in perfect unison -- like this Animatronic evil duo. Shiver.
Sonya, you're a brave woman to come forward about Rob and Amber like that! I hated what he did to the game and how he added that "strategy," but I couldn't help but enjoy on some level his absolute glee at his manipulations.
I will grudgingly admit that Rob and Amber knew how to play the game (and the other contestants). They made for good TV, that's for sure. But I was very happy they didn't win.
Sonya--don't feel bad, I sometimes find myself secretly pulling for the bad guy too--especially if the bad guy becomes the underdog and everyone hates them ;)
Kerri--ROFLMAO! My husband and I used to totally make fun of the wacky head turn of Terri and Ian!
Oh....wait! Sorry for writing novels on your comment section Kelly--I don't get out much!
Did anyone ever watch a show on FX called After Breakfast? (probably 10+ years ago) It had Tom Bergeron and Lori Hibbard (Gelman's wife) as the hosts...and Phil Keogan was one of the remote reporters. I loved that show...I was so sad when they took it off the air...my favorite was 'bob, the wart laden sock puppet'
And Kelly--what about poor Alton, does he know how you feel about Phil?
I have plenty of love for both Phil and Alton. They needn't worry. (What? Airan who?)
Nanette, I think I remember that After Breakfast show -- I don't think I saw it more than once or twice, and I don't remember Phil as a reporter. I remember the show being entertaining in a strange way.
I don't remember this early Phil show. Damn! I wish I did.
I suppose next birthday Kelly will receive some signed item from Phil or something. Damn that Airan anyway!
Nanette, I can't believe you remember the head turn, too! Martin and I used to watch the credits even if we'd taped the show just so we could make fun of the head turn.
Kerri,
(i turn my head to pan toward you)...No baby yet?
Kerri just left for the hospital -- cross your fingers, everyone!
Fingers are Crossed!!!
