Here is our new Dyson Animal DC15 (accompanied by the twins).
I'd heard many stories about the amazing Dyson vacuums, how they pull incredible and disgusting amounts of dirt out of theoretically clean carpets. I was desperate to get my hands on one after learning of Pepper's infestation. (Honestly, I've been wanting one for a long time. This was a perfect excuse to throw economy to the wind and just buy one.) We began with the living room rug, which had already been vacuumed twice in the previous 24 hours (once with our Hoover bagless vac and once with the Roomba). So it should have been clean, right?
Here's the Animal, triumphant after its maiden run.
You probably can't get a good look at just how disgustingly full that dust cup is. So trust me when I tell you it's totally full, probably more full that it's supposed to get before you empty it out. So gross. We went from there to the dining room and master bedroom, neither of which had been vacuumed since [time period removed to protect the innocent]. It's just too revolting to show before-and-after pics of the Animal's exploits in those rooms, so I'm not going to. Just trust me when I tell you that it was astonishing. And in each room, neither of which is large, both of which have area rugs rather than wall-to-wall carpeting, I had to empty the dust cup three times before finishing. Seriously, it makes my skin crawl. (Or maybe that's just the fleas.)
One small complaint: The Animal's wand tool is rather hard to use. After vacuuming the couch, my arms were aching from trying to control the wand. But it did a great job cleaning the couch, so how much can I really complain?
Overall, I'm quite pleased with the Animal. Is it worth the ridiculous sum of money you have to lay out to get one? It's hard to say. I guess it depends on what incredibly clean carpet is worth to you. Those of you who reside in the Chicagoland area are welcome to borrow mine and give it a spin. I think it'll win you over.
And here, in total disgrace, is the poor, sad Roomba.
If only iRobot and Dyson could get together and make the ultimate vacuum-cleaner robot! I'd pay for that.

Go here for some fun Dyson Animal pics.
Would you mind posting in a couple of months how well the Dyson is doing. I have been told by a carpet cleaner that all vacuums work their very best the first few times you use them, and start to fade from there.
And those girls are adorable---I like how you are getting them comfortable with the vacuum...one day, in the not so distant future, they will have to use that thing ;)
Sister, you never should have made that offer to borrow it. We decided against the Dyson last year for money reasons (hell, we'd been using a $1 garage sale vacuum for five years, so anything seemed a step up from there), but I'm dying to know what I'm missing.
I hope the fleas are sucked into flea hell and then become little flea poltergeists who haunt the pigeon people next door.
I've used your Hoover. Trust me, it didn't take much to be better than that.
I'm glad you got a decent vacuum.
I'm utterly and completely green with envy.
I've had my eye on the Dyson Animal for a while now. I shudder at putting anything on the credit cards we worked so hard to pay off.... but it's SO tempting.
My new house won't have carpet in it... but the amount of hair (mine, the cats, the dogs) I think justifies my need for the ANIMAL.
We have all hardwood floors, with area rugs in most rooms, and I still think the Animal is totally worth it. When I vacuumed the living-room rug this morning, I was again amazed by how much crap the Animal sucked up. I need to vacuum that carpet over and over, epmtying the dust cup as necessary, until the Animal can find nothing more to remove.
The fact that you vacuumed again this morning confirms what I fear. Once I have one of my own, I will go completely psycho and vacuum until I can't see one little hair inside that canister. Don't get me started on why I think carpet is the grossest invention ever. (Think old house, old carpet and what was underneath it when we pulled it all up.)
Agreed. Carpet is totally gross.
Lucky Snot! You got a purple one! I would like to have a purple one. I would ban my yellow one to the upstairs and use the "animal" downstairs!
Nanette, I have owned my dyson for a year and a half. It's still a major love affair.
